Taj spoke to reporters in Semnan, stating that both football federations have called for a change to an earlier decision that had been made due to past problems.
Taj also addressed concerns about the video assistant referee (VAR) system, stating that AFC representatives will bring the VAR device to Iran to improve the refereeing process and the stadiums scheduled to host the Asian Champions League will be equipped with the system.
Due to sanctions against Iran, FIFA is to purchase the VAR equipment, he said.
The Iranian and Saudi Arabian football federations had previously agreed to resume hosting each other’s teams as part of bilateral games after years of organizing those matches in other countries. This decision was made during a meeting in Sydney, Australia, between Taj and his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Yasser Al Misehal. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
As a result of this new agreement between Tehran and Riyadh, the AFC Disciplinary Committee will no longer hold matches between teams from Iran and Saudi Arabia in a third country. The AFC will officially announce this decision through a statement in the near future, according to a report by IRNA.
As a first step towards building closer ties between Iranian and Saudi Arabian football federations, a Saudi referee will officiate the upcoming friendly match between Iran and Angola.
